Kill Photography

A few years ago I was in the market for an online proofing site wherre I could upload and sell wedding photos. I checked out everything on the market at the time and was frustrated by the complicated plans and limited storage space. Then I found Zenfolio.

I am not one for long reviews, so here is my quick review of Zenfolio:

Pros
• Unlimited storage (functions as a 4^th backup for my images)
• Simple sales customization (choose your products to offer, and your markups)
• Auto-fulfilled orders (means I don’t touch a single print, they ship right to my customers door)
• Easily add custom products (like hand-tints, etc.)
• Create coupons/credits for customers (I use this for the print credits included in my wedding packages)
• Responsive and friendly support team

Cons
• Shopping cart sometimes confuses my non-technical clients
• Available gallery styles aren’t perfect (I would like more customization options)
• No desktop utility available to upload images (but there is a sweet Lightroom plugin!)

Needless to say, I have been very happy with Zenfolio. If you still fulfill your own print orders you really deserve some time off. When I have finished uploading the images to Zenfolio I am done with the wedding! Zenfolio takes care of the rest. I cannot tell you how nice of a feeling that is.

I have had this design in my mind for some time now: A simple, unpadded lens bag with a soft, velvety interior. That way you could change lenses rapidly without misplacing lens caps or struggling to get them on in high-stress situations. I must say though, that I am a very lazy inventor…as are most, I think? …so the idea just churned around in my head for the last few years. But now, my mental diversion can be found in physical form!

The stellar fellas over at Think Tank Photo have built a dream-come- true product! In fact…their whole line of photo bags and accessories are exactly what I have been looking for for almost 10 years.

As a serious modern photographer I am obsessed with controlling every aspect of color management - from camera to monitor to print. With careful attention to the details I can recreate the exact colors that I saw through the viewfinder or, accurately print specially brewed color and contrast tweaks. Ahh…perfection!

It would be nice if portraying your images on the web could be that precise. But, alas, it is not so. As with most objects for mass consumption the final quality is out of your hands. So. What do you do for all of those millions of people ( real or imaginary ) who will want to view your beautiful creations online? Online portfolios of work are essential this day and age and you will be judged on the way they look, despite the known issues of on-screen viewing.

Is there any hope for our poor images as they go out to be viewed on monitors with stock calibration, laptops in direct sunlight, fluorescent-lit cubicles, Wii’s, PS3’s and cell phones?
